Love the one you've got...and communicate effectively!!

The day comes and most people are so full of excitement/nervousness/joy that we forget what marriage is really about and what kind of commitment is actually being made. Marriage, in today's terms, is not necessarily for life. But, when walking down the aisle, one surely hopes that it will be. For me, I have had a topsy turvy marriage for 9 years now. However, the one thing that makes marriage last is C-O-M-M-U-N-I-C-A-T-I-O-N. After a few years of being married it seems that the sweetness and niceties kind of get washed out with the bath water. However, if each person in the marriage can just remember how they want to be talked to and treated then it probably has a better shot than not. Of course there are always going to be spats and disagreements. Can you imagine living with someone day in and day out for years without one? How boring!! My advice is to keep it real and keep it as sweet as can be :)

To have and to hold....really? OK, so you find THE guy or girl. Then what? How do you know they are THE one? What does it feel like? How well do you know this person after all? What if, after just a few short years that the person who you thought you married is not the same person at all?
I am a very emotional person yet have a hard time expressing my emotions. I have a hard time saying I'm sorry, have a hard time truly accepting love and have a hard time expressing my love. I have no problem expressing myself to my children --- or expressing my anger! :) But I wonder why, after 13 years of being with someone, I still feel uneasy letting down my guard. WELL... I do believe that two of the fundamental aspects that MUST be in place besides lust, attraction, chemistry, etc., are both respect and trust. Without those there isn't a whole lot that will keep a relationship together. The other is being able to forgive and move beyond the past. So he said something that really hurt you 10 years ago? Did he really mean it? Is is something that will impact your relationship forever? Does it serve you to keep holding the grudge? Most likely not...

In my 13 years of being in a relationship, I have had both good times and not so good of times. Our weakness is communication while under stress and the need to always be right (the both of us). It takes compromise, understanding and the desire to show up and be the best you that you can be.

Getting married on Kauai, for many people, is something that they only dream about.
